Small sailing yachts often need auxiliary propulsion that is compact, mechanically straightforward and light enough for a restricted engine compartment. The Yanmar GM Series was developed around those priorities. Yanmar’s current marine range centres on the single-cylinder 1GM10, while older GM engines remain widely encountered in existing sailboats and the replacement-engine market.
The Yanmar 1GM10 produces 9 MHP (6.6 kW) at 3,600 rpm from a 0.318-litre, naturally aspirated engine. It uses indirect injection, mechanical controls and direct seawater cooling, with a published dry weight of approximately 71 kg before the transmission is added. These characteristics make it particularly relevant to small monohull sailboats requiring modest auxiliary power.
Buyers may also find legacy Yanmar 2GM20 and Yanmar 3GM30 engines listed as used, rebuilt or remanufactured units. Their additional cylinders and higher outputs place them in a different installation class from the 1GM10. Where a new replacement is preferred, current models such as the Yanmar 2YM15 and Yanmar 3YM20 may be considered, but neither should be treated as a direct replacement without comparing dimensions, mounts, cooling, exhaust and propulsion requirements.
A 1GM10 propulsion package can be arranged with a compatible Kanzaki marine gearbox or the Yanmar SD25 saildrive. Older GM suffixes may identify shaft-drive, saildrive, seawater-cooled or freshwater-cooled versions, making the complete model number essential when ordering an engine or replacement parts. Gear ratio, propeller size, exhaust height, seawater flow and service access must all be confirmed before installation.
When comparing a Yanmar GM engine for sale, establish whether it is new, used, rebuilt, remanufactured or supplied for parts. Ask for the identification plate, operating history, compression or running-test results, cooling-system condition and an exact inventory of the gearbox, mounts, panel, harness and exhaust components. A complete quotation should also state warranty coverage, preparation time, packing and freight terms.
